Varanasi Village Initiative - Looking at Udai Rajpur

The aim of the study is to survey a village and identify the various issues that hinder the improvement of the quality of life of the people who reside within the village community. This village is then to act as a model village for the approximately 6-lac villages in the country. However, the one-size-fits-all approach that has been taken on previous occasion would be amiss here. For this purpose, the village of Udai Rajpur was selected. Udai Rajpur is a small village located on outskirts of the city of Varanasi. It is located at a distance of approximately 15 kilometers from the main city, and is spread over 50 hectares. At the end of the survey and the primary field study that was conducted in the village, it was concluded that the main activities that needed to be focused on in order to be able to improve the standard of living of the village community were agriculture and dairying. One of the main reasons of this is, in spite of the fact that agriculture is not a very economically rewarding activity; a majority of the village community is invested in it. The project is currently in the process of creating mechanisms that allow for the increase in quality and quantity of milk and agriculture, such that the produce may be marketed outside the village.

The base structure of the study was guided by Dr. Shreekant Sambrani and Ar. Sanjay Prakash.
